iOS 27 tips and tricks worth turning on

iOS 27 landed this week. If you run a café, clinic, retail floor, or trade business in Melbourne, Sydney, or anywhere in Australia, you probably do not need a lecture on what Apple announced — you need ten minutes of sensible setup so the phone stops nagging you and starts saving time.

This guide covers the settings we actually turn on for clients. Every path below is written as text steps — no fake screenshots. We can add device captures to this page later once the rollout settles.

Before you start

• Back up first: Settings → your name → iCloud → iCloud Backup → Back Up Now (or plug into a Mac/PC if you prefer local backups).
• Charge and connect to Wi‑Fi: major updates are large. Do not start on 4G in the van unless you have data to burn.
• Check compatibility: iOS 27 installs on iPhone 11 and later. Apple Intelligence features (including the new Siri AI tier) need a newer chip — broadly iPhone 15 Pro / 15 Pro Max and iPhone 16 series onward. If you are on a 14 or standard 15, you still get iOS 27 — just not the full AI stack.

1. Install iOS 27 at the right time

Apple listed Monday 14 September 2026 as the global release. In Melbourne and Sydney that usually means the download appears overnight into Tuesday 15 September, often between roughly 3:00am and 5:00am AEST. Apple does not publish an exact local minute — check before you assume it is broken.

1. Open Settings → General → Software Update.
2. If iOS 27 is offered, tap Download and Install (or Install Tonight if you want it while you sleep).
3. Keep the phone on charge and connected to Wi‑Fi until it reboots and shows the lock screen again.

Good to know: stagger updates across staff phones if you rely on iMessage groups or a shared POS workflow — one person on the new OS and three on the old one rarely breaks anything, but it is worth testing your critical apps on one handset first.

2. Turn on Apple Intelligence and Siri AI (if your phone qualifies)

Siri AI ships as a beta in English at launch. Australia is outside the EU restriction, so English-speaking users get access on day one. It is useful for summarising long emails, drafting quick replies, and pulling details from on-device context — not magic, but it saves typing on the run.

1. Settings → Apple Intelligence & Siri (on supported devices).
2. Enable Apple Intelligence and follow the on-screen setup.
3. Under Siri, confirm Listen for and Voice match your floor — open-plan cafés may want “Press Side Button for Siri” instead of always-listening.

If you do not see Apple Intelligence in Settings, your handset is not in the supported tier. iOS 27 still installs; you just skip this section. See our lineup guide for which models qualify.

3. Set up a Work Focus mode

Focus is the single best feature for owners who get pinged all day. A Work focus lets through customers and key staff while muting Instagram, news, and the group chat.

1. Settings → Focus → + → Work (or duplicate an existing focus).
2. Choose people: allow calls from Favourites or specific contacts (partner, manager, after-hours line).
3. Choose apps: allow only what the shift needs — POS, banking, maps, messaging for staff.
4. Turn on Focus Status so people see you have notifications silenced (optional but polite).
5. Schedule it: Add Schedule → set weekday hours, or tie it to a location if you have a single site.

Swipe down from the top-right on Face ID phones (or up from the bottom on older models) → long-press the Focus pill to switch modes between service, admin, and off-duty.

4. Customise Lock Screen and Control Centre

Two minutes here saves hundreds of taps a month.

Lock Screen

1. Lock the phone → long-press the wallpaper → Customise.
2. Add widgets you actually check: calendar, weather, next appointment, battery on a second device.
3. Trim lock-screen notifications to Time Sensitive only if the banner flood is killing your concentration.

Control Centre

1. Settings → Control Centre → add Low Power Mode, Flashlight, Calculator, Voice Memos, and QR Code Scanner if you scan supplier labels.
2. Drag your most-used controls to the top — you will thank yourself during stocktake.

5. Safari, Passwords, and privacy quick wins

1. Strong passwords: Settings → Apps → Passwords (or Settings → Passwords on older layouts). Turn on Security Recommendations and fix reused passwords on business logins — start with email, bank, Shopify, Google.
2. Auto-fill: Settings → General → AutoFill & Passwords → enable Passkeys and iCloud Passwords if your team shares a trusted Apple ID pattern (most businesses should use individual accounts instead).
3. Safari privacy: Settings → Apps → Safari → turn on Prevent Cross-Site Tracking and review Privacy Report monthly.
4. Mail Privacy: Settings → Apps → Mail → Privacy Protection → enable Protect Mail Activity if you field a lot of supplier spam.

Good to know: if staff use a mix of iPhones and Android, pair this with a shared password manager your bookkeeper can audit — Apple Passwords is great on iPhone but does not replace a team vault on its own.

6. Clean up Photos and use search properly

Product shots, site photos, and receipt snaps pile up fast. iOS 27 continues Apple’s on-device library tools — handy before you pay for more iCloud storage.

1. Open Photos → Albums → Utilities → run Clean Up (duplicates and fuzzy shots).
2. Search by text: try “invoice”, “ABN”, or a supplier name — on-device indexing often finds paperwork photos faster than scrolling.
3. Settings → General → iPhone Storage → review Photos recommendations (offload old media if you are tight on space).
4. Turn on iCloud Photos if you replace devices often — Settings → your name → iCloud → Photos.

7. Battery settings that actually matter

No myth-busting here — just the toggles that move the needle on a long trade day.

1. Settings → Battery → Battery Health → check Maximum Capacity. Below ~80% on a phone you rely on for calls and maps, plan a battery service or replacement cycle.
2. Settings → Battery → Charging → enable Clean Energy Charging if overnight office charging suits your routine (optional).
3. Settings → Battery → Low Power Mode — add to Control Centre and use it on late afternoons, not all day (it slows background tasks you may need).
4. Settings → Privacy & Security → Location Services → set non-critical apps to While Using instead of Always.
5. Disable Background App Refresh for apps that do not need live updates: Settings → General → Background App Refresh.

8. Messages and Mail niceties

Messages

1. Filter unknown senders: Settings → Apps → Messages → Unknown & Spam → filter unknown senders so booking SMS and spam separate.
2. Pin your active job threads: long-press a conversation → Pin.
3. Enable Send as Text Message fallback if you work outside metro coverage — Settings → Messages → Send as SMS when iMessage is unavailable.

Mail

1. Settings → Apps → Mail → Notifications → set VIP alerts for key accounts only.
2. Swipe options: Settings → Mail → Swipe Options → map left/right to Archive and Flag — faster inbox triage between customers.

9. Accessibility and Display for the shop floor

Older eyes, bright windows, and gloved hands are common on real floors — not just in accessibility clinics.

1. Settings → Accessibility → Display & Text Size → Larger Text → drag to a comfortable size (affects system text, not every app).
2. Settings → Accessibility → Display & Text Size → Bold Text on if thin fonts wash out under fluorescent light.
3. Settings → Accessibility → Touch → adjust Tap Assistance if staff use screens with wet or gloved fingers.
4. Settings → Display & Brightness → Auto-Lock → set longer during active POS use, shorter when the phone sits on a counter.

10. Continuity between Mac, iPad, and iPhone

Still relevant in iOS 27 if you run a Mac at the desk or iPad for rosters.

1. Sign into the same Apple ID on each device → Settings → your name and check iCloud is syncing Contacts, Calendars, and Notes you rely on.
2. Handoff: Settings → General → AirPlay & Continuity → enable Handoff — start an email on Mac, finish on the phone walking to the supplier.
3. Continuity Camera: on a Mac, right-click in a document → Import from iPhone → scan a document or take a photo. Handy for quick ABN scans and warranty cards.
4. Universal Clipboard: same menu → enable Handoff (clipboard rides along). Copy a tracking number on the Mac, paste into Messages on the phone.
5. Instant Hotspot: if your iPhone is the team’s backup internet, keep Bluetooth and Wi‑Fi on — the phone appears in the Mac Wi‑Fi menu without re-entering the password.
