TL;DR: HomePod mini 2 goes on sale in Australia today, Friday 30 October 2026, for A$229 RRP inc. GST in pink, green, blue, white and midnight. Compared with the original HomePod mini it moves to Apple's S10 chip, Wi-Fi 6E and Bluetooth 6, and it can join Apple's new four-speaker surround setup with the new Apple TV 4K. The headline feature, Siri AI, isn't there on day one. Apple says it's coming to Australia in English in a future software update. If your current HomePod mini works fine, there's no rush. If you're building out an Apple smart home, or want surround sound with the new Apple TV 4K, it's the one to buy.

This is a launch-day guide built from Apple's official Australian announcements and specs, not a hands-on review. We'll add our own impressions once we've had one set up.

What's new in HomePod mini 2 compared with the original?

On the outside it looks familiar. Apple lists the same 84.3 mm height and 97.9 mm width as the original, and it's 10 grams lighter at 335 g. The changes are mostly inside, plus some new colours. Here's how Apple's own spec sheets compare:

The new features Apple calls out:

  • S10 chip and computational audio. Apple says it analyses music in real time to optimise dynamic range, loudness and acoustic performance. The audio hardware is still a full-range driver with dual force-cancelling passive radiators and 360-degree sound.
  • Four-speaker surround with the new Apple TV 4K. Pair four HomePod mini 2 speakers, or HomePod (2nd generation) speakers, in matching front and rear pairs with Apple TV 4K (4th generation). Apple says the speakers and the Apple TV work out where each speaker is in the room and calibrate timing and levels automatically. Apple's own example image puts two full-size HomePods at the front and two HomePod mini 2s at the back.
  • A speaker for your Mac. HomePod mini 2 can be the default speaker for a Mac with Wi-Fi 6E or later, as a single speaker or a stereo pair.
  • Sound Glow. The top glows and pulses with the music, with colours matched to the album artwork. You can also play soundscapes such as rain with their own animations.
  • New colours. Pink, green, blue, white and midnight, each with a colour-matched woven power cord.
  • Siri AI, later. Apple's rebuilt Siri is coming to HomePod mini 2 in a future software update. See below.

What carries over: stereo pairs, multiroom audio with AirPlay, Intercom, iPhone Handoff, the temperature and humidity sensor, and Sound Recognition, which listens for smoke and carbon monoxide alarms and alerts your iPhone, iPad and Apple Watch. Apple says Sound Recognition shouldn't be relied on in emergencies, so keep your real smoke alarms.

Does HomePod mini 2 have Siri AI yet?

Not yet. Apple says Siri AI will come to HomePod mini 2 in English in a future software update for Australia, along with the US, Canada, India, New Zealand, Singapore, South Africa and the UK. Apple hasn't given a date. On day one, you get the current Siri.

When it does arrive, Apple says Siri AI will:

  • Hold a more natural, back-and-forth conversation and answer general questions using up-to-date information from the web.
  • Recognise up to six people in a household by their voice.
  • Use your personal context from a paired Apple Intelligence-enabled iPhone or iPad. Apple's examples are finding a song a friend recommended in a text, setting a reminder tied to a calendar event, finding a recipe in an email, or adding to a grocery list.
  • Run requests on the device or through Apple's Private Cloud Compute. Apple says data processed there isn't stored or made accessible to Apple.

There are some fine-print requirements. The owner of the home in the Home app needs an Apple Intelligence-enabled iPhone or iPad on the latest software with Siri AI turned on. Personal-context requests need a paired Apple Intelligence-enabled device. Apple also says some server-side features have daily usage limits. People in the house without a newer iPhone still get the general-knowledge and conversation improvements, according to Apple.

Should I upgrade from the original HomePod mini?

Based on what Apple has announced, this is how we'd think about it:

  • Probably wait if your original HomePod mini is working well and you mainly use it for music and simple voice control. The big new feature, Siri AI, isn't available yet, and you already have the home hub, Intercom, multiroom and Sound Recognition features.
  • Upgrade if you're buying the new Apple TV 4K and want the four-speaker surround setup. Apple's surround requirement is HomePod mini 2 or HomePod (2nd generation), so original minis don't qualify.
  • Upgrade if you want a speaker for a recent Mac. The Mac speaker feature needs a Mac with Wi-Fi 6E or later.
  • Buy one if you're starting an Apple smart home from scratch. At A$229 it's the cheapest way to get an Apple home hub with Thread, and it's the speaker Apple is lining up for Siri AI.
  • Check your phone. Many of the Siri AI features depend on an Apple Intelligence-enabled iPhone or iPad. If your household's phones are a few years old, you'll get less out of the upgrade.

How does HomePod mini 2 fit into an Apple Home or Matter smart home?

HomePod mini 2 works as a home hub. Apple says it lets you control your HomeKit and Matter-enabled accessories from the Home app on your iPhone, whether you're home or away. It also has Thread built in, the low-power mesh network many Matter accessories use.

With your voice you can lock the front door, close the garage, lower the blinds or turn off the lights. In the Home app you can build automations and scenes. The built-in temperature and humidity sensor can also trigger automations, for example turning on a fan when a room gets warm.

If you're planning lights, blinds, climate or security across a whole home or office, that's where a bit of design up front pays off. Our home automation service covers planning, setup and training so the system keeps working after we leave.

Will HomePod mini 2 work with Apple HomeView?

Yes. Apple says HomeView, its new 7-inch smart display, works with HomePod and HomePod mini for multiroom audio around the house. HomeView arrives on Friday 13 November 2026 at A$449. It also works with "Works with Apple Home" and Matter accessories, so a HomePod mini 2 bought today will still fit when you add a screen later.

The Apple Home Collection of LG and Schneider cameras, doorbell, lock and thermostats isn't coming to Australia at launch. We covered that in our Apple × LG smart home post and our October launch round-up. For now, Matter accessories sold locally are the practical choice.

Is HomePod mini 2 a good speaker for a small business?

It can be a tidy, affordable option for a café, salon, studio or small office. A few things to keep in mind:

  • Music licensing. A personal Apple Music subscription isn't licensed for playing music in a commercial venue. Sort out business music licensing first.
  • Shared spaces. Voice recognition and personal context are designed around a household. In a workplace, think about who can ask it to read messages or reminders before you turn those features on.
  • Wi-Fi. It supports Wi-Fi 6E, but it'll only be as reliable as your network. Several speakers in a multiroom setup benefit from good coverage.
  • Smart office control. As a home hub it can run lights, blinds and climate on a schedule, which suits small offices and shopfronts.
